JEE Advanced Chemistry Paper Analysis 2025

The JEE Advanced 2025 Chemistry papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2) were well-balanced and conceptually rich, mixing inorganic, organic and physical chemistry with strong emphasis on reaction mechanisms, qualitative analysis, electrochemistry, equilibrium, and numerical problem solving. Both papers combined single-correct, multi-correct and numerical questions, with Paper 1 also using matching-type sets extensively in Chemistry.

Overall pattern (Chemistry)

  • Both papers: 16 Chemistry questions each.
  • Question-type balance:
    • Paper 1: MCQ (single-correct), MR (multiple-response), Numerical Value, MCMT (matching/list type).
    • Paper 2: MCQ, MR, Numerical Values (Chemistry numericals continue up to Q16; no Chemistry matching in Paper 2).
  • Style:
    • Conceptual focus on: hybridisation + bonding trends, redox and electrochemistry, acid–base and ionic equilibria, solid state/solution concepts, organic named reactions and test-based identification.
    • Many questions mix 2–3 ideas (e.g. mechanism + acidity, qualitative group reagents + inorganic concepts, electrochemistry + thermodynamics).
    • Numericals require accurate stoichiometry and formula recall rather than very heavy algebra.

PAPER – 1 (Chemistry)

Structure & Types

  • Total Number of Questions (Chemistry): 16 (Q1–Q4 MCQ, Q5–Q7 MR, Q8–Q12 Numerical, Q13–Q16 Matching/List).
  • Question Types:
    • MCQ (single correct): 4
    • MR (multiple correct): 3
    • Numerical Value: 5 (Q8–Q12) + 1 longer numerical-like synthesis count (Q13)
    • MCMT (Matching List type): 3 (Q14–Q16 plus Q13 is effectively multi-step numerical)
  • Overall Level:Moderate to Difficult, with several multi-concept physical and organic problems.

Approximate difficulty split (Chemistry, Paper 1)

  • Numbers of Easy Questions: ~4
    • Examples: decomposition of ammonium salts (Q1), KMnO₄–I⁻ product (Q3), P–H containing monomer identification via carbylamine/Dumas idea (Q12), basic qualitative group reagent logic in one match.
  • Numbers of Moderate Questions: ~8–9
    • Examples: UV–Vis order of Co complexes (Q2), acidity in hydrocarbons (Q4), MO/BO questions (Q5), diamagnetic f-block ions (Q6), SN2/bond strength trends in halides (Q7), electrochem time/current, weak acid pH, van der Waals Vm ratio, expansion work, qualitative matching sets.
  • Numbers of Difficult Questions: ~3–4
    • Examples: multi-step yield calculation (Q13), some matching sets combining multiple named reactions/tests (Q15, Q16), thermodynamic work-type numerical (Q11).

Most covered and important topics (Chemistry, Paper 1)

  • Physical Chemistry
    • Electrochemistry (charge passed for dichromate reduction, expansion work in electrolysis).
    • Ionic equilibrium and pH approximations (weak acid, water auto-ionization).
    • Gaseous state and van der Waals equation (Vm cubic, coefficient ratio).
  • Inorganic Chemistry
    • p‑block nitrogen chemistry (NH₄NO₂, NH₄NO₃ decomposition).
    • Coordination chemistry and spectrochemical series (Co complexes and λmax ordering).
    • f-block (La/Ce/Yb/Lu) magnetic behaviour; qualitative group analysis reagents (H₂S in HCl/NH₄OH, (NH₄)₂CO₃, NH₄OH+NH₄Cl).
  • Organic Chemistry
    • Acidity of C–H in different frameworks.
    • Haloalkanes reactivity and leaving groups (Finkelstein, Swarts, SN2 trends).
    • Polymers (Nylon-6,6 monomer and its tests), multi-step synthesis with yields, classical named reactions (Stephen, Sandmeyer, Hoffmann, Cannizzaro) and organic qualitative tests (diazotization, ninhydrin, FeCl₃, phthalein dyes).

Paper 1 Chemistry wasconcept-heavy, especially in MO/bonding, qualitative inorganic, and organic mechanism/test questions, with physical chemistry numericals at a standard JEE Advanced level.
